some tips to interact with BMTC conductors:
——-You——-
Kannada: “Marathalli hOgtta?”
Hindi: “Marathalli jaayega?”
——Conductor——-
Kannada: “hOgatte/hOgalla”
Hindi: “jaayega/nahin jaayega”.
Note:
1) In Kannada, the question ends in a “aa” while the answer ends in the “-e” (the ‘ay’ sound in d’ay’).
2) While in Hindi you negate most words with a ‘nahin’ _prefix_ – nahin hai, nahin jaayega, nahin aayega etc the Kannada equivalents have a ‘illa’ _postfix_. (illa, hOgalla, baralla).
3) Hindi doesnt recognise a neuter gender, while Kannada does. The bus here is neuter. If the bus were a male, the conductor would have used ‘hOgtaane’ in place of hOgatte. The negation – hOgalla – is common across all genders.
If the conductor said “hOgatte”, you get in, then ask:
——-You——
Kannada: “Ondu/eradu/mooru/naaku ticket koDi”
Hindi: “Ek/do/teen/chaar ticket dijiye”
Note:
Unlike Hindi, where all requests end in a “-iye” – aayiye, jaayiye, dijiye, dekhiye, keejiye Kannada has different prefixes – banni, hOgi, koDi, nODi, maaDi. Though most such requests end in a -di’, be careful not to confuse hOgi with hoDi – hoDi is to ‘maaro’ 🙂
The conductor gives you a ticket, but you are new to B’luru and want to make sure someone can alert you when you are closing in on your destination:
—–You——
Kannada: “Stop bandaaga solpa hELteera?”
Hindi: “Stop jab aayega tab thoda bataayenge?”
Note:
1) ‘bandaaga’ is gener neutral. It splits to ‘banda + aaga’. which is ‘aayega + tab’.
2) Hindi has kab, jab and tab – Kannada has yavaaga, and aaga for kab and tab. Readers can kindly update the Kannada equivalent for tab.
——Fellow passenger——
Kannada: “hELteeni”
Hindi: “bataaunga”
Note:
1) hELteeni is gender-neutral, unlike Hindi, where males respond -unga and females respond -ungi.
2) Notice the ‘-teeni’ in hELteeni. maaDteeni – karoonga, nODteeni – dekhoonga.

There is a classic difference here…

1) Both Tamil and Kannada share the same pronouns – almost. Add a ‘u’ at the end of the Tamil pronoun, and it becomes Kannada:
avan – avanu
avaL – avaLu
avar – avaru
naan – naanu
nee – neenu
2) The neutral pronouns – athu and ithu become adhu and idhu in Kannada.
3) Lets look at how the verbs fare:
Vaa – baa
tere (open) – tegi (tere is also used in pure, official Kannada).
naDi (walk) – naDi
ODu (run) – ODu
paaru – nODu
saapiDu – thinnu
po – hogu
kuDu – koDu
toongu – malagu
vanduvitte – bandubitte
Plenty of ‘v-‘ starting words in Tamil become words starting with ‘b-‘. E.g: vandu = bandu, vitte = bitte, vaa = baa etc
4) Lets ask some 1-word questions:
yevaLo (how much) – yeshtu?
yaar (Who) – yaaru?
yenge (Where) – yelli?
yepdi(How) – hey-gay?
yeppo (When) – yavaaga?
saapaad aacha (Had Food?) – oota aaita?
5) Lets form some simple sentences:
Tamil: konja inge vaango Pl. come here
Kannada: solpa illi banni
Tamil: oru ticket kuDungo Give me a ticket
Kannada: ondu ticket koDi
Tamil: en kitta irku (Hindi:Mere Paas haii.e. Its with me)
Kannada: nanna hatra ide
Tamil: romba nalla irku (Hindi:Bahuth Accha Hai)
Kannada: tumba chennag ide
Tamil: pakkathil irku (Its near here i.e. Paas hai)
Kannada: pakkadalli ide
Tamil: ange irku, paarungo (Its there,Look)
Kannada: alle ide, nODi
Please learn to use baraha and the kannaDa script too. It would make it easier to learn.

Man, You have done a very great job – trying to teach Kannada. It was my wish to learn Kannada for several years now and your compilation of words and phrases from different languages helped me a lot to understand the sentence structures. Thanks a lot !!!!
